I am sure you’re aware that peptic ulcer disease is common in Nigeria, with three (3) out of every ten (10) persons you know suffering from it.

Peptic ulcers are holes or cracks in the protective lining of the upper small intestine or stomach, which come into contact with stomach acids and enzymes.

Dieting, fasting, and skipping meals due to poverty (SAPA) and poor living patterns (including overindulging in fatty and spicy foods) were once thought to cause ulcers. It was supposed that such influences contribute to a buildup of stomach acids that erode the stomach, intestine, or throat protective lining.

While increased stomach acid production is undoubtedly a determinant in ulcer development, other factors appear to play a role as well.

  • Overuse of narcotic pain relievers (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen)
  • Consuming a lot of alcohol
  • Psychological stress
  • Caffeine and tobacco smoking
  • Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and
  • Old age

If left untreated, an ulcer can lead to significant complications such as stomach bleeding. This can potentially lead to a hole in the stomach, which may require surgery to close.

The most popular treatment is a combination of antibiotic drugs (Flagyl and co.) to destroy the H. pylori bacteria and acid-reducing medications such as cimetidine and omeprazole.
